WILL BISD'S DUAL-ENROLLMENT STUDENTS FLEE TO TSTC?

With the partnership betweenThe University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College to officially end in August of 2015, communication on our campus over the next couple of years will be of vital importance to achieve our goal of offering seamless services to students. Today we begin a new series of e-bulletins,Transition Focus, which will inform you of decisions that have been approved by both UTB and TSC for the transfer of services.
DUAL ENROLLMENT
In regions of the state that have both a univeristy and community college, dual enrollment has traditionally been offered through the auspices of the community college. Following that model, UTB will be transferring the function of providing dual enrollment to TSC, with the exception of students at the Brownsville Early College High School and UTB Math and Science Academy.School districts are in the process of being notified that high school students in our region will continue to have uninterrupted opportunity to earn tuition-free dual enrollment high school and college credit taught by teachers who meet the same rigorousSACS standards in their high school classroom.
These courses will continue to be eligible for transfer to any public institution of higher education. Until TSC obtains separate accreditation, dual enrollment courses will be accredited under the partnership accreditation.
We ask your help in assisting the dual enrollment staff as they prepare for a smooth and seamless transition.

(Ed's. Note: In the above-released public service announcement, it appears that UTB is assuming that the dual-enrollment Brownsville Independent School District students will automatically attend TSC in the Fall of 2012.
However, we have learned that that may not be the case as the BISD honchos at the Advanced Academics Department are contemplating on going with Harlinge's TSTC, not TSC. We wonder why members of the department klike Acacia Ameel and Pilar Janis have opted to contract with an institution outside of the city, instead of having the students serviced by our local community college. Don't you? Dual Enrollment offers college classes, for college credit, to high school students. In the UTB model, the students take the classes on their high school campuses. The school districts pay a five dollar fee in lieu of tuition and fees, meaning the students pay nothing, and the school districts provide the use of college textbooks free of charge to the students. UTB has about 6,000 students in Dual Enrollment. They are from many districts, not just BISD.)
